Employers 'should look for transferable skills'

15 March 2010 In Graduates

Accountancy graduates with transferable skills may stand a better chance of gaining meaningful employment, if recruiters listen to a recent call from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

According to the government body, the nation's employers should recognise useful skills gained in other lines of work and consider helping candidates to adapt their talents to suit their new role.

Jobcentre Plus chief executive Darra Singh recently explained that bosses should "widen their net" when it comes to recruitment and consider those with skills in other sectors.

The body recently commissioned YouGov to conduct a survey, which found that more than two-thirds of jobseekers are considering moving to a new industry.

Meanwhile, just one in five of those searching for work have taken training courses to help them switch career paths.

Mr Singh added that there is plenty of support for those looking to switch to a new role and that employers could also help make the transition a pleasant one.ADNFCR-868-ID-19669620-ADNFCR
