‘Degree Creep’ Evident in Third of UK Businesses

28 May 2010 In Graduates

Home Learning College urges accounting profession to recognise the value of non-graduates

‘Degree creep’ is causing employers to overlook valuable candidates, according to research conducted by distance learning specialist Home Learning College. A survey of senior decision makers in UK businesses revealed that 32% have noticed degree creep in their industry – defined as an increasing number of graduate – only roles – despite only 26% saying that graduates make better employees.

When drilled down to industry sector, the survey showed that two thirds (67%) of accounting and finance professionals believe degrees have been devalued and do not guarantee high quality employees. A further 53% think many degrees are worthless and don’t merit the paper they are printed on.

In response to recent higher education funding cuts and rising graduate unemployment, Home Learning College is urging the accounting industry to combat degree creep and pay greater attention to candidates with relevant vocational qualifications. Research findings suggest that this approach could make UK businesses more competitive, with 67% of accounting and finance decision makers stating that vocational courses are better at developing industry-specific knowledge and skills than academic study.

Home Learning College Academic Director Dave Snow thinks it is time for the accountancy sector to re-consider traditional hiring strategies and give greater credence to non-graduates. He comments: “Within the accounting sector a non-graduate, vocational pathway – such as AAT – can develop practical skills and provide a solid foundation from which to build a successful career.

“It is inevitable that funding cuts in higher education will encourage many talented young people to forgo a university education and opt for alternative routes into accounting. Employers who wish to continue attracting the best candidates should think beyond degrees and develop more inclusive recruitment schemes that encompass those with the brightest minds, irrespective of the educational path they chose.”
