Dow Jones Indexes develops, maintains and licenses market indexes for investment products. Among its more than 3,000 indexes are the world's best known stock indicator, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the leading pan-European indexes, the Dow Jones STOXX Indexes.
Dow Jones indexes underlie a variety of financial products in today's marketplace, including exchange-traded funds, futures and options contracts, mutual funds, variable annuity and equity-indexed annuities, and structured products such as OTC options, swaps, warrants, equity-linked notes and public/private debt.
The indexes are maintained according to a clear, transparent and systematic methodology that is fully integrated across all Dow Jones equity index families. This methodology, together with historical data for all Dow Jones indexes, is open for review and is made available at no cost to the professional investment community.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was originally launched in 1896 by Dow Jones and company, publishers of the Wall Street Journal. The DJIA is the world's most widely followed stock indicator, tracking the New York Stock Exchange - the world's largest stock market. The index is price weighted, meaning that each stock's position in the index is strictly determined by its current price.
Comprised of 30 blue chip US stocks, the DJIA appears in newspapers, magazines, television, radio, financial documents, computer screens and in everyday conversation around the world as a barometer of the US stock market. The DJIA accounts for approximately 29% of the investable US market, as measured by the Dow Jones US. The DJIA's 30 components are substantial companies - including American Express, Boeing, Coca Cola, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and Procter and Gamble - renowned for the quality and wide acceptance of their products and with strong histories of successful growth.
