Department of Trade and Industry

The Department of Trade and Industry drives an ambition of 'prosperity for all' by working to create the best environment for business success in the UK. It helps people and companies become more productive by promoting enterprise, innovation and creativity.

The DTI champions UK business at home and abroad, investing heavily in world class science and technology. It protects the rights of working people and consumers and stands up for fair and open markets in the UK, Europe and the world.

The DTI states its three main objectives as:

  • Supporting successful business
  • Promoting science and innovation
  • Ensuring fair markets

Supporting successful business primarily entails ensuring a thriving economy through e-business, providing support for manufacturing and small/medium enterprises (SMEs), export and inward investment and by tackling inequalities and shaping policy. DTI has also recently worked with the Department for Education and Skills to produce a Skills Strategy that will raise productivity through higher skills, knowledge and expertise.

The DTI's commitment to promoting world class science and innovation was outlined in 'The Innovation Report', published in December 2003. The report set out how economic growth and development in modern advanced economies is partially dependent on the introduction and subsequent use of new technology. The report sets out clear proposals to achieve this goal through investment in research and knowledge transfer.

The DTI recognises that open markets promote innovation and productivity and consequently promotes fair markets throughout Europe and the rest of the world so that all nations - in theory - will benefit from increased trade and prosperity. The DTI believes this is possible through encouraging consumer confidence, modernising the competition framework, maximising potential in the workplace and through the promotion of equality and diversity both in the UK and internationally. Examples of this include major employment relations initiatives such as the National Minimum Wage, Working Time Regulations and Work-Life Balance campaign.
