Government Accountancy Service

The Government Accountancy Service (GAS) was established in 1982 when all professional Accountants in Government were brought together into a single functional specialism. Statistics available from 31 March 2002 indicate that the GAS consists of in excess of 2,000 trained Accountants and 800 trainees.

There are just over 1,500 Accounting Technicians who have either completed their studies or who are at different stages of this NVQ qualification, in addition there are over 800 ACCA Diploma holders (including qualified members and trainees). GAS members are deployed throughout central Government departments and their agencies.

There is no central management function within the Government Accountancy Service, so all recruitment and career development issues concerning Accountants and Technicians are dealt with by individual departments and agencies rather than a specialist management unit for accountants. The GAS offers guidance and advice to departments on the selection, employment and development of their accountants via the Head of Accounting Profession network.

The Government Accountancy Service also publishes its own magazine called The Gasette. It is published three times a year.
