Job application advice

So you’ve finally found your dream job advertised! Question is…what do you do now?

First of all

Get all the information possible! Most job adverts give only brief details of the vacancy so you’ll either need to phone or email the recruiter to get more information or visit their website to get the full job spec and application form.

Pay close attention to any information about the application process – if you get it wrong you’re guaranteeing you’ll never get that job. Find out if you can send a CV or if you’ll need to fill out an application form. If they’ve requested a CV be sure to include a cover letter. If there’s an application form to fill in then don’t be lazy and just send off your CV – no matter how good it is it won’t stand a chance.

Never assume that an email application should not have the formality of a letter – it should! In any form of application you need to maintain a standard of formal, polite professionalism. Make sure everything is well presented and up-to-date, and tailor everything you send out to the specific job you’re applying for.

Now comes the worst part of the application process…the wait!

Most recruiters will give an indication of when you should expect to hear a reply. If you haven’t heard anything 1-2 weeks after the closing date it’s always worth following up your application with a quick email or phone call. Most employers respond positively to an enquiry as long as you are articulate, courteous and patient.

If you’re not successful then make sure you learn something from it. Ask for feedback to find out where your weaknesses lie and give you something to work on – then get right on with your next application – what are you waiting for?!
