Daniel Lintott - Auditor

Starting Out

Tell us about your academics and career path. How did you get to where you are now?

I graduated in Business Economics and Accounts from Southampton University. After graduation, my objective was to work in Finance. I initially worked as an Internal Auditor for an Insurance company where I stayed for 4 years and developed effective auditing skills. I then took a career break before I joining another Insurance company to continue working in Internal Audit. My goal is to move into an Audit Management role and to stay working in the Financial Services industry.

What core skills did you pick up in the early stages of your career that were still relevant when you got to higher-level positions?

I developed effective communication skills, negotiation techniques and time management skills that are all essential in my current role.

Studying

Are you qualified or currently studying for a Financial qualification? What benefits do you expect to gain from qualifying?

I'm currently studying for a diploma in Internal Auditing. I expect this to lead to the opportunity of leading more complex audits once I've passed. Longer-term, I intend to continue my professional development by studying for the advanced diploma in Internal Auditing. This qualification will improve my chances of moving into an Audit Management role.

As we speak

What's the best thing about working for your current employer?

Working with a professional team of Auditors and continuously improving my Auditing skills.

How do you keep a good balance between your job and life outside work?

This is something that can be difficult because I conduct audits abroad as well as in the UK. As we speak, I've been on assignment in Europe for five weeks. However, at weekends I make sure that I enjoy quality time with my family.

What's the biggest work-based faux pas you've made?

Come on, there must be something?

Fair enough. What websites do you use regularly?

The Institute of Internal Auditors and the Financial Services Authority.

Tips from the top

Can you offer any advice to someone looking to start out in Accountancy and Finance?

Start training for a professional qualification as soon as possible because you need to invest a lot of time. This becomes harder to do later on in life when you are married and have children.
