Job description

Finance Bursar
Cheshire
Education: Qualified Accountant required (ACA/ACCA/CIMA)

The recruitment of the position of Finance Bursar comes at both an exciting and challenging time for The Grange School. An excellent track record of academic results, underpinned by a talented and motivated staff, has seen the School grow in a relatively short period of time into an inspiring and rewarding environment for staff and pupils. The Grange School is subsequently recognised as one of the top independent schools in the north-west.

Your varied responsibilities will include:

  • To create and provide relevant and timely management information to support business decision-making, including management accounts, cash flow statements and projections, budgets and forecasts and administering the School Bursary Fund.
  • To be a member of The School's Executive Committee, contributing to the Board of Governors on all financial matters and attendance at Property and Finance Committees, and full Board meetings.
  • Review financial processes to continually seek improvements and efficiencies and liaison with third parties.
  • Ensure that cost control measures are implemented and challenged on all areas of expenditure across the School.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory financial responsibilities for the School (SOFA and SORP) and as a Charitable Company and Registered Charity. Preparation of periodic returns to HMRC, Charities Commission, Companies House and other regulatory or membership bodies. Liaison with the statutory authorities and with other organisations, including provision of data for DfE and ISC census reports.
  • Review and improvement of the Financial Model to support the strategic direction of the School, typically out to five years.
  • To lead and manage a four strong Bursary team delivering the day-to-day financial support for the School.
  • To liaise with the Chairman of the Finance Committee over strategic financial requirements.

A motivated and dedicated person with the strategic vision required to undertake such a pivotal role, you will be able to draw upon a number of examples to illustrate your experience:

  • The ability to delegate.
  • The appetite to suggest and drive change.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Clear leadership.
  • Discretion and empathy when faced with conflicting demands.
  • The confidence to manage a very wide range of stakeholders, from parents to staff to Governors.
  • The desire and ethos to work within the School and demonstrate its values.
  • A calm and flexible nature when working under pressure to meet tight deadlines. Previous experience in the education sector would be of interest but not essential.

The School is about to embark on a phased capital investment programme which will provide a modern sports-hall, new dining facilities, a dedicated Sixth Form block and new classrooms. Work is planned to commence in the next eighteen months, with a budget of up to £4m for each project. With the recent completion of a £2.4m project to extend the Junior School, the fiscal demands of such extensive capital investment are significant and experience in this area would be an advantage.

This will all be coupled with a professional finance qualification (ACA/ACCA/CIMA/CIPFA) and the technical excellence that such a background provides.

The Grange School is an independent co-educational day school for approximately 1200 pupils aged 4-18 years split on two sites housing a Senior School and Junior School respectively. It has enjoyed enormous success in its short existence and continues to make great strides to build even further on that success. This is a school that looks to the future while maintaining the excellence of its past.

The Grange has flourished because staff have given generously and willingly of their time and energy to the academic and personal development of the pupils in the many forms that this may take. It is the abiding hope of the Headmaster that all staff will approach their employment by the school in that same spirit.

Where specific UK qualifications are required we will take into account overseas equivalents. All third party applications will be forwarded to Michael Page.
