Job description

An excellent opportunity to work as Finance Director for the Royal Mint, the world's leading export mint with access to state-of-the-art technology and a reputation for innovation and excellence. The Royal Mint is a limited company with a track record of profitable growth and it is currently involved in exciting high profile projects such as the 2012 Olympics Coin Programme.

As Finance Director you will be expected to provide financial leadership to the Royal Mint and as a key member of the Executive Management team you will contribute to the strategic direction and growth of the organisation. Additionally you will provide professional advice regarding the implications of strategic and operational policies, commercial plans, major contracts and capital projects. Duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Contribution to the development of the Royal Mint's strategy and the overall leadership of the organisation.
  • Effective leadership and development of the Finance and Procurement functions.
  • Commercial evaluation of major contracts, product campaigns and manufacturing projects.
  • Maintenance of robust working capital control, cash planning and forecasting.
  • Management of trading on the London Metal Exchange, bullion and foreign exchange hedging markets.
  • Responsibility for all external financial statutory reporting and returns and the maintenance of appropriate financial controls.

You will report to the Chief Operating Officer and be responsible for 4 direct reports and circa 35 staff in total. This is a senior leadership role that will give the jobholder the chance to genuinely influence the continuing success of the Royal Mint.

You will be a graduate calibre qualified Accountant, probably ACA qualified, with a demonstrable track record of successfully driving growth and positive change. As a commercial finance professional you will be comfortable getting involved in all areas of a business and be capable of generating ideas and challenging the status quo. The culture of the Royal Mint would suit an individual with an open management style who is comfortable working in a non-hierarchical environment.

Although sector background is not too important a background in either manufacturing or retail would be advantageous and previous exposure to shareholder management or mergers and acquisitions would be a definite advantage. Importantly you will possess strong influencing and leadership skills and have a desire to contribute to the future development of this national institution.

The Royal Mint makes all of the UK's coinage and is known across the world for the high quality of its coins and its heritage, craftsmanship and artistry. The Royal Mint is also the world's leading export mint supplying over 100 issuing authorities across the world with around a 16% share of the global market. In 2009-10 the organisation had a turnover of £172 million and although it has roots that extend back over 1,000 years it also has state-of-the-art technology and the highest standard of minting.

As an organisation it prides itself on customer service, the highest production standards and the maintenance of shareholder value. The quest for continued and sustainable profits is led through winning new customers and pleasing existing clients, while at the same time reducing costs by making production more efficient and cutting out waste.

Though the Royal Mint is Government owned it is a limited company in order to allow it to pursue commercial opportunities and expand more rapidly, taking advantage of the flexibility that comes with company status. The organisation is accredited as an investor in people and prides itself on an open and non-hierarchical structure. This is an exciting time to join the Royal Mint and to get involved with landmark projects such as the 2012 Olympics Coin Programme.
