National Express is one of the UK's largest passenger transportation companies, focused on providing market leading bus and coach services across three international geographies, together with rail operations in the UK. The Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange, having floated in 1992, and achieved net revenues of £2.7 billion in 2009. The National Express Group Finance function is being relocated to Birmingham. As a result, a number of positions are being recruited into the new, state-of-the-art head office in Digbeth, Birmingham. This is a real opportunity for an ambitious candidate to be part of a team building and creating a world-class group finance function effectively from scratch, leading the way in cascading change throughout the organisation.
The Role:
- Direct the Business Planning cycle and play a leading role in improving quality of management information reporting (both historical and projections) across the business, ensuring that it is timely, accurate and relevant.
- Oversee corporate finance activity, including acquisitions, disposals and strategic opportunities/partnerships across the Group, liaising with local management teams and external advisers, as applicable.
- Provide support to senior group and local management, including providing a corporate input to business and strategic planning, assessing capital investment projects and supporting the evaluation of new contract bids. Challenge the business in its performance and assumptions to drive for greater shareholder value.
The Candidate:
- Qualified Accountant with substantial experience of listed company reporting requirements and IFRS. Ideally Management Accountant trained or a Chartered Accountant with extensive commercial experience in management accounting, business analysis and modelling.
- Experience of leading a team, in particular in allocating work to and supervising individuals in a challenging and pressurized environment. Experience of interfacing with business management at the highest levels.
- A mature and self-confident individual, willing to take responsibility and make decisions, but with the judgment necessary to refer to more senior colleagues for advice when appropriate. A team player with absolute integrity and strong interpersonal skills, comfortable operating at the most senior levels both within and outside the Company.
