
The government should do more to promote the Rate Relief Scheme (RRS) tax savings idea to businesses, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Designed to help small companies save money on their tax bills, the RRS was introduced in 2005, but according to reports only a fraction of eligible companies have applied to date.
Marc Shoffman, spokesperson for the FSB, says that businesses should either have the RRS automatically applied or the government should do more to promote the scheme to those eligible.
He claims that there "seems to be confusion" over who should be promoting the RRS.
"It is currently included on the form to fill in when paying business rates and should be promoted by all government agencies including the Valuation Office Agency and Businesslink, et cetera, as well as local authorities," he added.
The Daily Telegraph recently reported that more than £200 million is estimated to have been unclaimed since the RRS was introduced.
