The government should take steps to ensure that accountancy graduates and other university leavers are not in line for another year of employment stress, it has been claimed.
According to the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), 2010 could be a tough year for private sector employment and Westminster should do all it can to soothe the pain for young workers.
It suggested that more "carrots" need to be dangled in front of firms to take on young workers after Labour Market Statistics showed that 952,000 16 to 24-year-olds across the UK are currently unemployed.
CIPD public policy adviser Gerwyn Davies explained that the government could have a major influence on youth joblessness through its handling of initiatives such as the Future Jobs Fund and Young Persons' Guarantee.
"In terms of demand from employers, there is still some slack in the economy," he said. "Many workers haven't been made redundant because they have moved on to part-time working or flexible working arrangements."
The expert added that it could be 2011 by the time companies start hiring on a normal basis again.
