New government plans could force banks to disclose pay details of those earning over £500k If new government proposals were to go ahead, banks would be required to disclose the number of employees earning over £500,000.

In November last year, Sir David Walker's government-commissioned report the Walker Review suggested there should be a higher level of openness in banking pay.

Banks are required to disclose named pay details for board-level staff but, according to Mr Walker, they should reveal how many earn more than £1 million.

City minister Lord Myners, who is consulting on the proposals made in the Walker Report, thinks the pay details of those earning over £500,000 should be revealed by banks.

"The objective is not to punish or embarrass banks, but to give shareholders more information about the structure of remuneration," Sky's business correspondent Joel Hills commented.

In an attempt to lessen the criticism high-earning bankers have been receiving recently, HSBC chief executive Michael Geoghegan has said he will donate his £4 million bonus to charity.ADNFCR-868-ID-19663569-ADNFCR
