CIPD highlights benefits of gap-year vacations Taking time off as part of a gap year can be a positive thing, it has been claimed.

According to Vanessa Robinson, a representative from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), an organisation with a membership base of 127,000 individuals, choosing a gap year with a future career in mind may offer later advantages when the time comes to search for a job.

However, Ms Robinson also stressed that a gap year designed purely for relaxation will not inflict any damage upon an individual's overall levels of employability.

"To a certain extent, if you decide you do just want a total 'chill out' year then fine," said Ms Robinson.

"[However,] in terms of coming back into the workplace, [it's good] if you can demonstrate that for at least part of the time you have done something which can add to your CV."

Among the suggested gap-year examples include setting-up a business.
