Graduate Policy Adviser – Grads and Undergraduates

Starting salary £27,451 for Undergraduates, rising to £30,370 depending on experience

Westminster, London

You’re set to graduate with a good degree (or have already done so). You may have some experience under your belt. But will your chosen role – current or future – make the most of your analytical mind and communication skills? Will the level of responsibility and influence live up to your expectations? If not, you make want to re-consider your career path.

Joining HM Treasury is the ideal way to harness your talents and make a real contribution. You’ll move directly into a Policy Adviser role – as part of a team working at the heart of government and at the centre of the decision making that’s shaping the nation’s future.

You don’t have to have a background in finance or economics. You don’t need a specific degree. We’re interested in your intellectual curiosity, your talent for grasping ideas quickly and your ability to understand complex information – and turn it into clear, credible advice.

About us: The Treasury is the UK’s economics and finance ministry. We are tasked with maintaining control over public spending, deciding how money is raised from taxpayers, setting the direction of the UK’s economic policy and working to achieve strong and sustainable economic growth.  This means we have a say in every policy from every government department - giving us a far-reaching influence on some of the most important issues facing the country.

What you’ll do: As a Policy Adviser, you’ll develop expertise within a specific area of economic or financial policy and projects – anything from banking regulation to health spending to how individuals are taxed. Exact duties vary, but your role is likely to involve:

  • Researching, analysing and evaluating complex data, then developing or enhancing policy ideas
  • Writing briefings for Ministers and senior managers
  • Responding to written questions from MPs and members of the public

Development: You’ll enjoy a structured development programme. It features a mix of formal and informal learning, complemented by mentoring, knowledge sharing and coaching from a variety of colleagues.

Your profile:  Our advisers come from a wide range of backgrounds. As long as you have obtained at least 320 UCAS points (at A-level or equivalent) and are on course to achieve (or have achieved) a minimum 2:1, your degree can be in any discipline. We value an analytical mind, the ability to see the bigger picture, and excellent communication skills. You can learn more on our careers website (including nationality eligibility criteria).
