Salary package range £39,032 - £52,795 depending on qualifications and experience (plus a 25% bonus on all gross earnings upon successful completion of contract).

The Falkland Islands Government is seeking an experienced qualified accountant to join our team in the South Atlantic to fill the position of Chief Accountant in the Treasury Department.

The Job

The Chief Accountant will be responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the financial management function of Falkland Islands Government. This involves a diverse range of budgetary related work including developing budgetary procedures, meeting monthly with Directors and Heads of Service to improve financial monitoring, reviewing and leading on managing and critically reviewing the annual budget submissions, writing reports for Standing Finance Committee and providing financial training to FIG departments.  

You will need to be hard working and confident in dealing with a variety of individuals with little reference to senior officers. You will need to hold a degree (or equivalent) and preferably be a CIMA or CIPFA fully qualified accountant (though other CCAB qualifications will be considered with relevant experience) with at least five years PQE and five years relevant experience in a multi-disciplined public sector organisation, and be able to:

  • Work with departmental budget managers,
  • Work on own initiative and with creativity,
  • To work under pressure for lengthy periods with additional discretionary effort,
  • Be politically aware, 
  • Supervise other staff.
  • Design and run training sessions.,

The Package 

  • This is a fixed term contract for two years in the first instance but may be extendable upon mutual agreement. 
  • Basic salary ranges from £39,032 - £52,795 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Eligibility for a 25% taxable gratuity of all basic salary earned over the period of appointment, payable at the end of the contract.
  • Airfares for the post holder (and qualifying dependents) at the beginning and end of contract, as well as mid-contract return flights or allowance to travel elsewhere. 
  • A relocation grant.
  • Educational allowances for 16-18 year olds.
  • Favourable income tax rates.
