A Qualified Accountant is needed for a six month Fixed term Contract, likely to become a permanent position.
Your new company
A UK-registered charity based in Oxford, London and New York, this organisation has just completed its first major expedition into the deep ocean around Bermuda and West Atlantic, using the latest submersibles and deep sea technology to carry out a health check on the ocean. Their Missions provide the scientific data and media content to amplify ocean prioritisation, accelerate ocean literacy and inform and catalyse marine protection. Through our expeditions, technology development, ground-breaking research, published discoveries, broadcast films and high-profile communications and events, we aim to help revolutionise ocean science and conservation.
Your new role
- monitoring departmental performance - providing monthly and annual financial reporting and control to budget holders, identifying issues and taking action based on financial performance;
- business planning and analysis - taking the lead to prepare business plans, forecasts, what-if analysis, risk planning, budget planning and ad hoc analysis throughout the financial planning cycle, periodic reforecasts, and consolidated financial results;
- oversight and delivery of the day to day departmental activities, including banking, payments and invoices;
- relationship management - building relationships with business managers and others within the firm to deliver financial and operational targets;
- Ensure our outsourced payroll is functioning effectively;
- monitor the cash flow and Treasury management requirements;
- managing compliance of UK and international VAT & Tax;
- controls - developing and implementing sound financial controls appropriate for the size and scale of the organisation;
- supplier and donor management - negotiating and managing the relationship with outsourced providers and other key suppliers;
- policy management - reviewing and negotiating insurance policies for the company and, where appropriate, to be the main liaison with external entities on policies managed centrally;
- company secretary duties;
- preparation of the monthly management accounts at the end of each month and explanatory commentary;
- set up a financial system appropriate for the size of Nekton;
- participate and actively input to the strategic development of the organisation, fundraising efforts and related business planning;
- monitor the funding situation, and prepare the funding grid at the end of each month if relevant as the organisation's funding diversifies.
- lead on all external audits whether statutory or donor
- lead on the production of the annual financial statements;
What you'll need to succeed
- proactive, motivated, self-starter with a desire to provide strong, regular and rigorous financial management and to further their experience in senior management of an NGO;
- a qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA);
- strong people management, influencing and communication skills;
- confidence and experience in working closely with senior management and trustees;
- experience in the preparation of management accounts and associated commentary;
- detail conscious and can communicate the big picture;
- experience with donors, their requirements and donor reporting;
- experience of working on and implementing business process improvement activities;
- a good knowledge of financial systems and strong Excel skills.
- Experience within third sector, conservation, technology and science organisations would be welcome. A knowledge of expeditions and international projects would be a great advantage.
