Role Overview:
The purpose of this role is to lead Mail Newspapers consolidated financial planning, performance management, accounting and control processes and partner with Mail Newspapers central departments to support the delivery of stretching budgets and enable informed decision making
Key accountabilities:
o Oversee Mail Newspapers budget, forecast and multi-year business plan processes
o Drive accounting quality, strong financial control and continuous improvement of processes
o Deliver monthly close, reporting and board communication
o Drive the evolution of reporting, analysis, and performance management
o Partner with Mail Newspapers central departments in a pro-active, commercially astute manner; provide valuable insight and advice for commercial deals
o Lead, motivate, and mentor one direct report
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Quality & Control (Mail Newspapers)
• Oversee and develop consolidated budgeting, forecasting and rolling risk and opportunities processes; work with Mail Newspapers Commercial Finance Managers to analyse figures and deliver insightful board packs
• Work with the Shared Service Function (SSF) and Mail Newspapers Commercial Finance team to ensure delivery of accurate management accounts, integrity of financial processes and the operation of an effective internal control framework
• Deliver monthly reporting and board communication, including providing first line review of consolidated Mail Newspapers P&L and Balance Sheet. Analyse financial performance, trends in key indicators and rolling risks and opportunities to create insights for managing performance and influencing key decisions
• Work with the Shared Service Function (SSF) to drive efficiency and consistency of account to report processes and sharing of best practice
• Ensure compliance with Group and Divisional financial policies, procedures and controls
Commercial Finance (Mail Newspapers central departments)
• Provide financial leadership and analytical support to Mail Newspapers central functions. Support the evaluation of commercial opportunities, issues, and deals and use relevant, actionable insight to influence decisions to drive better performance
• Partner with relevant business leaders to develop business plans, budgets and forecasts, advising on key assumptions and trade-offs and supporting the alignment of resources to strategic priorities
• Drive the evolution of the content and automation of management information, ensuring its optimal value and efficiency of production
• Build strong relationships, trust and credibility with relevant stakeholders across the business
• Support the delivery of in-year targets and, where appropriate, the re-allocation of resources through the year
• Identify and evaluate financial risks and opportunities; drive actions to mitigate the risks and exploit the opportunities
• Develop a detailed understanding of key revenue and cost drivers, as well as relevant competitor and industry context
Key Skills
This role will suit an individual looking to develop their career in a commercially oriented finance department with significant scope to influence business decisions.
• Qualified accountant (CIMA, ACA or equivalent) with relevant post qualification experience
• High quality analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to quickly review and understand business models and strategies, focus on key issues, and deliver creative and insightful analysis
• Good commercial judgement; ability to develop awareness of commercial issues and provide sound financial support and advice
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly form working relationships and gain credibility with a wide selection of staff from different levels and disciplines
• Strong influencing skills and sound judgement to achieve an appropriate balance between challenge and partnership
• Confidence to initiate, drive and deliver change and improve engagement of stakeholders with finance
• Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience in developing reporting and KPI content, format and style to effectively communicate a breath of information
• Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills; experience of and ability to leverage different IT systems
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to successfully balance multiple priorities and deliver to tight deadlines
• A team player. Someone who is open and who is able and willing to deliver beyond his or her personal brief
• Highly motivated individual with a desire to develop the role, and the ability to challenge current practices and think innovatively
