Supply Chain Financial Controller – purpose of the role:

To act as the key financial support for all aspects of the supply chain, and make sure that the business understands the financial implications of decisions that it takes in these areas. To act as the financial business partner to the COO, Operations Director, Executive

Key Accountabilities:

Business Partnering:

  • On behalf of the Dof  FP&A, make sure that finance have input to all major business decisions relating to Manufacturing, Logistics, Planning and Procurement. Significant influence of large cost budgets (approximately £400million total).
  • Develop relationships with the directors of the Supply Chain functions, and with their teams, so that finance advice is sought as a matter of course. Become a trusted member of those SC teams, or develop their direct reports so that they take on these roles with the SC teams
  • Challenge the SC teams to improve performance via focused reporting of key financial information
  • Make sure that the business always gets a joined up SC view of financials, and that this view is also joined up with the relevant commercial financials
  • Educate the SC teams about cash, and how they can influence this throughout the supply chain

Performance reporting:

  • Develop high quality daily, weekly and monthly reporting which enables the business to understand its financial performance vs budget and vs prior periods
  • Provide insight to the supply chain on trends and issues, particularly in the monthly Exec performance report
  • Drive and Coordinate the Revised Forecast and Budget processes as required for the SC parts of the business
  • Provide relevant financial information to management on Stock
  • Contribute the financial input to the long term business plan for supply chain (c. 3 year strategic planning)

Team Development:

  • Manage a Supply Chain Finance team
  • Ensure that development needs of the team are addressed via training and career plans
  • Play a leadership role in the senior Finance team (CFO’s direct reports)
  • Input to Finance strategy and planning (6-18 month timeframe) with a primary focus on execution of these plans.
  • Take ownership of special projects that span across Finance
  • Participate as a member of the Leadership Team

Control:

  • Ensure that Stock is tightly controlled via focused reporting, and regular stock takes. Develop reporting as needed
  • Ensure that all SC operations understand the need for strong financial control. Identify areas where weakness in controls occur and implement corrective action in conjunction with the SC teams
  • Ensure that the business works within the parameters of the governance matrix approved by the Board
  • Undertake post completion reviews for major initiatives or capex spends, to determine if targets have been met and value for money has been delivered

Projects:

Help management appraise the viability of certain projects (eg site closures etc) by taking the financial lead on these projects, and making sure that all financial implications are considered for all options

Accounting:

Making sure that the monthly accounts reflect an accurate view of performance within the SC. Ensure that the SC Finance team have full involvement in the production of the monthly accounts

Essential role related knowledge, skills, qualifications and experience at selection

  • Qualified accountant with at least 10 years post qualification experience
  • Knowledge and first hand experience of all SC operations
  • Site based experience is preferable
  • Up to date with latest accounting policies etc
  • Integrity and honesty
  • Strong people management skills
  • Personal credibility and gravitas
  • Excellent written and presentation skills
  • Ability to work to very tight deadlines and inspire staff to do the same
