Senior Consolidations Accountant

About the role 

A new role has been created in our Finance team for a Senior Technical Accountant to help strengthen expertise provided to the Group. The role will take responsibility for ensuring the accuracy and delivery of the monthly consolidation, and providing significant contribution to external reporting responsibilities, including liaison with external auditors as required.

Reporting to the Head of Group Financial Reporting & Treasury, the post holder will also be instrumental in ensuring a solid internal control environment is in place and maintained across the group.

About Group Financial Reporting at Abcam

The Group Financial Reporting team is made up of 4 people based in the UK head office in Cambridge. The team prepares the monthly consolidated numbers through a combination of Navision and TM1 (IBM Cognos planning product), delivers the external reporting responsibilities of the Group and is seen as the go-to technical accounting experts.

The consolidation consists of 1 UK and 11 overseas trading companies and consequently the team has frequent communication with Abcam finance personnel across the globe. The nature of work can be wide ranging with multiple demands due to the rapidly changing environment – recent projects which the team have been, or are currently, involved in include group structure simplification, acquisition accounting, and new global ERP system implementation.

The small team size requires each team member to take responsibility from an early stage and be as comfortable working independently as working in a team.

Roles & responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for the Group’s monthly consolidation process
  • Play a key role in the production process of the group interim and year end statutory accounts
  • Provision of technical accounting research and guidance in response to queries raised, including producing first draft accounting papers as requested
  • Improve and maintain Group accounting definitions & policies documentation
  • Assisting the Head of Group Financial Reporting & Treasury in maintaining and improving the Group’s internal control environment
  • Responsible for managing the UK subsidiary statutory accounts process to ensure accurate and timely preparation through to filing

About you

The ideal candidate will be from an audit background (preferably ‘Big 4’) with experience of performing the group consolidations process in a large, international organisation and experience of auditing group consolidations under IFRS. The role would suit a Chartered accountant looking for their 2nd role in industry with a rapidly growing, AIM listed business with excellent progression opportunities.

You should have a comprehensive understanding of financial controls & related testing and possess a strong technical background supported by up to date IFRS knowledge.

Whilst attention to detail and accuracy is paramount for this role, we’re looking for someone who can balance getting “into the detail” with seeing the bigger picture. Experience of reviewing the work of junior colleagues would be highly advantageous. You should also possess strong communication skills and have an open and flexible approach.
