Based in the foothills of Snowdonia National Park, the Centre for Alternative Technology is a leading environmental education and visitor centre demonstrating practical solutions for sustainability. CAT covers all aspects of green living: environmental building, eco-sanitation, woodland management, renewable energy, energy efficiency and organic growing.

CAT has a diverse portfolio providing education from school visits to Higher Education courses, a commercial arm comprising an eco shop and accommodation for up to 115 people, a visitor centre and a research and campaigning arm. As a charity, CAT also has a significant supporter base and fundraising operation, which comprises around a third of core income.

Having recently completed a restructure, CAT is planning significant growth and development in the coming years.
Detailed Job Description
This is a truly exceptional opportunity for a commercially focused Finance Director who is looking to progress to a Chief Operating Officer position in 18 months.

The Finance and Operations Director will support the Chief Executive in not only delivering strong financial, administration and IT systems and control, but will play a key role in delivering the strategy and growth plans of one of the UK's most established and well-respected environmental organisations.

The Finance and Operations Director is responsible for the overall financial management of the organisation including managing a small finance team, the promotion of the short and long term financial health, budgetary control, statutory control, a strong governance framework and business planning.

In this hand-on role, the Finance and Operations Director is responsible for active management of the organisation's cash balances, strong financial control and for maintaining and reviewing financial forecasts. The post-holder also manages the organisation's IT function, leading a small IT team in development and implementation of systems needed to serve the needs of staff and customers.

The Finance and Operations Director will be responsible for creating a centralised Administration function to efficiently support the wider organisation on a day to day basis.
Candidate's Profile
•    You will be a CCAB qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA) or be qualified by experience with skills gained relevant to the role requirements.
•    You will be able to demonstrate working in a multi-revenue stream organisation.
•    You will have a working knowledge of restricted funds and fully understand how this applies to business operations.
•    Ideally you will have experience of working in the Charity or Higher Education sectors, however candidates with multi sector experience will be considered.
•    You will be able to demonstrate a wide business and operational acumen, strong people skills and seek to progress to COO within the organisation.
•    You will be able to demonstrate skills delivering tight cash management.
•    Ideally you will understand the complexities around VAT partial exemption.
•    You will have experience of developing financial, admin and IT systems to support the growth of an organisation.
•    You will be a proven leader who can take not only steer and bring along your team, but the wider organisation as well during a period of growth.
What's on offer
•    Starting salary is negotiable depending on experience.
•    Progression to Chief Operating Officer within 18 months.
•    Flexible working arrangement which can allow working 1 day per week from home.
•    30 days' holiday per annum (including bank holidays).
