With over 115,000 members in 140 countries, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has been at the heart of the mechanical engineering profession since 1847. The Institution must continue to be relevant to its members, the customers and clients it serves and to society. An important part of meeting this challenge is to operate a modern, lean, organisational model that uses best processes and technology to meet customer expectations and be financially sustainable for the future.

The Institution runs a number of commercial ventures which are pertinent to its core values to subsidise and grow its Learned Society activities. In the year running to December 2015, overall total income from its commercial activities and membership subscription was £26.2m.

The Finance and Commercial Director will be accountable for financial strategy, management and reporting, business planning and risk management within the IMechE and its multiple commercial subsidiaries. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a leading role in one of the most forward-thinking and commercially savvy international professional institutions.

The post holder will:

• Provide leadership to the Institution’s Finance and Accounting strategy, to optimise the Institution’s financial performance and strategic position.
• Define and implement the strategy for the development of commercial business units, in particular its strategy of growth by acquisitions.
• Be accountable for compliance with tax and charity law issues and the by-laws of the Institution.
• Manage and ensure the Institution’s Finance delivery model (currently outsourced) is optimised for the organisation’s current and future needs.
• Support the Digital Transformation Director to renew the Institution’s approach on the use of technology to further enhance member experience, improve decision making and accountability, and make the most effective use of the organisation’s people and resources.
• Participate fully as a member of the Directors’ Management Team across the whole of the IMechE including supporting boards both internally and in support of the Trustee Board and Committees.
