Head of Finance

Manchester

£44,606-£54,926

Overview of the role
If you want to make a difference and improve the lives of everyone in the country, the Equality and Human Rights Commission needs to hear from you. The work we do affects everyone and is about making Britain fairer. Whether that’s fighting for better rights for disabled people, progress on race or gender equality, or ending discrimination at work, we are the leading voice that makes change happen.

Working in the Commission’s finance team, you will perform a leading role in the development and strengthening of our financial management practices, following the implementation of our new target operating model. This very collaborative way of working requires you to play your part to ensure we improve accountability, streamline our process and ensure our ways of working are flexible and responsive enough to support the Commission’s programmes, projects and strategic aims robustly.

However, we need more than your technical expertise for this role. As the most senior finance person in our Manchester office, you will provide inspiring and visible leadership and management to a small finance team; guiding them in the delivery of a comprehensive, high quality and proactive financial service. This includes leading the preparation of the month end management accounts, maintaining key financial controls and ensuring the integrity of financial systems and processes.

You will also provide support to the Finance Director with strategic oversight, in the preparation of the statutory accounts; in managing the relationship with the payroll supplier, and will work proactively to develop streamlined and efficient financial processes embedding financial management within the organisational culture.

To be successful in this exciting yet challenging role, you will be a professionally qualified accountant (or actively working towards a qualification) and be able to demonstrate an understanding of working within a public sector financial management environment with core skills of leadership, delivery management and stakeholder engagement as well as professional knowledge, skills and experience.

In return, we can offer you a great place and a dedicated team working with you on subjects that really matter to people. We will support you in developing professional skills and expertise, encourage you to seek out opportunities and provide opportunities for you to broaden your horizons, develop new skills, and progress your career.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is a statutory body established under the Equality Act 2006. It operates independently to encourage equality and diversity, eliminate unlawful discrimination, and protect and promote human rights. It contributes to making and keeping Britain a fair society in which everyone, regardless of background, has an equal opportunity to fulfil their potential. The Commission enforces equality legislation on age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. It encourages compliance with the Human Rights Act 1998 and is accredited by the UN as an ‘A status’ National Human Rights Institution.
