Our client is a high-end retail business that is on a steep growth trajectory. The CFO is seeking a Financial Controller to work closely with them as they continue to expand. The new Financial Controller will report to the CFO and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the finance function, and for ensuring robust financial systems, processes & controls across the business.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Manage, mentor & grow finance team, motivate with appropriate KPIs and ensure excellent teamwork across the function
- Ensure all income & expenditure is reconciled to the bank on a weekly basis
- Manage supplier payments and monitor aged creditor balances; ensure supplier accounts are regularly reconciled
- Maintain & update a rolling 13-week cash forecast and submit weekly to CFO, ensuring consistency with monthly forecasts
- Maintain relationships with financial providers, e.g. insurers, banks, consumer credit provider, card acquirers, audit & tax advisors etc
- Ensure timeliness, accuracy and usefulness of financial and management reporting
- Ensure accuracy of balance sheet accounts; manage preparation & monthly analysis of each balance sheet account
- Ensure all supplier invoices are processed accurately and on time (according to department-set KPIs)
- Ensure all finance requests from stores are handled efficiently and on time (according to department-set KPIs) by the team
- Ensure cash receipts are safeguarded across the estate
- Ensure stock takes are regularly carried out in line with company Stock Take policy across the estate & warehouse; flag material differences and investigate as required
- Liaise with Group Internal Audit function on financial aspects of internal audit, and review & improve financial procedures as appropriate
- Maintain the fixed asset register
- Prepare information requested by external auditors for annual audits, and review financial statements
- Liaise with external tax advisors and help prepare annual CT returns
- Ensure quarterly VAT & Intrastat returns are prepared accurately and on time, and submitted in accordance with HMRC deadlines;
- Manage the production of monthly management accounts meeting both internal & Group deadlines
- Calculate variances from the budget/forecast; highlight any areas of weakness in cost control & recommend improvements
- Ensure all financial policies are up-to-date and that there are appropriate internal controls in place over all accounting & financial transactions across the business
- Ensure staff expenses are audited and processed correctly each month
- Liaise with CFO on financial aspects of company’s Risk Register
- Submit the annual return on Consumer credit transactions to the FCA
This is a highly visible role in a fast-paced SME. Applicants will be fully qualified (ACA preferred) with prior experience of working within retail. Applicants will have a demonstrable background in taking full ownership of day-to-day finance in a growing business and will ideally understand the challenges of expanding an organisation. The new Financial Controller will be able to utilise their strong understanding of system implementations and managing financial controls and processes to support ongoing growth.
