Management Accountant / Financial Controller Designate

Shropshire

£45-50,000 + Benefits

The Business:

Working in partnership with Seymour John, our client is a Shropshire home-grown success story, enjoying a steep growth curve and with ambitions to take the business further.  They are cutting edge technologically, and have a queue of internationally recognisable clients keen to do business with them.

Historically the accounting function has been relatively uninvolved in the running of the business, but the good news is that there is a huge appetite for this to change.  The finance function, under supremely talented leadership, is at the early stages of this journey in transforming itself into becoming a valued and integral part of the business that allows it to inform decision-making, plan its expansion wisely, and deliver profitably, achieving maximum surpluses for re-investment in the future development of the organisation.

The Opportunity:

Today the business has challenges in producing timely, accurate monthly management accounts, cash flow forecasts, and is only recently developing its influence and involvement within the operational business units from a low base.  As you begin your journey, you will need to implement new and better processes behind many key accounting outputs and will certainly need excellent data manipulation skills using Excel.

Within a year it is hoped that you will have helped educate others to understand financial issues and processes, deliver management accounts and review efficiently, have added higher quality MI that supports focused decision making and be an influential team member during the budgeting and forecasting process.  You will have earned trust amongst operational colleagues and understood their businesses better.  You will take responsibility for managing the Accounts Payable team and solving any related issues to ensure smooth accurate transactions and accounting.

If you have any experience in developing or implementing ERP systems that could be very useful indeed.  Likewise any costing experience would certainly come in useful as in the future systems need to be put in covering job/batch costing, standard costing and activity based costing.  You may one day have the opportunity to support customer discussions, negotiations and the winning of new business.

Your approach must be collaborative.  This is a business driven by engineers and supported by finance, not the other way around.  You will need to be genuinely interested, keen to help, and support your colleagues in order to develop mutually beneficial, high trust, working relationships so that they are prepared to buy into your suggestions around adapting their behaviour.  There will be plenty of issues to fix, but plenty of day to day accounting which forms the core of the role too so you will need to be in for the long haul and prepared to see the process of change through.

What the business needs now is a doer, problem solver and process improver with determination. In the future, there is a clear opportunity to grow your career learning from an exceptional Finance Director.  The reward for your hard work will be progression to Financial Controller and recognition for the positive impact you’ve had upon the business and its people.

If you have the necessary experience, skills and character traits described here, I would love to hear from you as soon as possible.
