City workers 'moving to teaching' claims TDA

04 December 2008 In Graduates

City workers are increasingly exploring other job options in teaching, it has been claimed, as a result of the ongoing credit crunch.

John Connolly, head of the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) suggested that teaching represents a safe position while other industries are fluctuating in the economic turbulence.

"We are investing heavily in conversion courses which take people who have degrees in other subjects and send them to a six month science boot camp to get trained," said Mr Connolly.

Such drastic measures may be over-reactions, however, as many analysts have predicted a fall in job vacancies of just one per cent in 2009.

The number of graduate vacancies has so far remained largely unchanged as public sector employers are recruiting steadily and many large financial institutions have suggested that they will not slow down recruitment as they plan five or six years ahead of time.

HSBC is one major bank to have confirmed that it will keep recruitment levels steady as it intends to recruit with the intent of producing managers, which in itself takes several years.
