Accountancy graduates pointed towards HMRC

One accountant for a private practice has suggested that recent accountancy graduates consider working for HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if they find that the jobs market in the private sector is closing up.

As many graduates ponder postponing an entrance into the workplace as a result of the financial downturn, many potential accountants could do well to apply to work for the government, said Adrian Huston, in a Belfast Telegraph report.

To work for HMRC, applicants will need a 2.2 degree, the report states, although "an alternate to these degrees is a professional accountancy qualification - Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, Institute of Chartered Accountants or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants".

Certainly, a job in the public sector will appear attractive to many concerned about being the first one in and last one out of a private company.

HMRC has recently hit the headlines for its attempts to seize undeclared funds in offshore bank accounts; a move likely to net the government over £500 million.
