Fraud director to bring NHS reforms to private sector

A fraud specialist with a strong track record of fighting fraud in the NHS has joined KPMG's forensic services team.

Jim Gee previously worked as the Department of Health's director of counter fraud services, where he managed the creation of the NHS Counter Fraud Service and led a 55 per cent reduction in losses incurred by patient fraud.

Gee also presided over an impressive 12:1 return on budgetary investment in counter fraud work and aims to bring elements of the system he created to KPMG.

"It is often assumed that best practice arises in the private sector and then needs to be transferred to the public sector," he told Accountancy Age. "However, I believe that there are many great things happening in the public sector that private companies can learn from.

"Some of the measures implemented in the NHS could very usefully be applied in the outside commercial world too."

Gee was instrumental in making an extra £811 million available for the NHS to spend on patient care over the past seven years. This equates to more than 50,000 kidney transplants.

He will be succeeded at the Department of Health by his deputy, Steve Phillips.

KPMG's fraud department evaluates suspicions of malpractice, investigates them vigorously and improves rates of recovery.
