A great many accounting practices are failing to benefit from an online presence, a new survey from consultant firms Muzeview and Hinze Communications reveals.
Their research indicates that many firms - including leading accountancies - are not making the most of new media technology, Accountancy Magazine reports.
The Big 4 practices are keen to embrace online technology as a way to provide internet users with the information, however, with podcasts and blogs becoming increasingly popular.
Technology such as podcasts and RSS feeds allows clients and other users greater control over where and when they can consume information, the study notes.
But despite the relative ease of establishing a web presence and the obvious benefits it provides, only five per cent of the accounting firms surveyed by Muzeview and Hinze had adopted such technology "to any significant degree".
'Uncomfortable reading'
"This should make uncomfortable reading for anyone in the other 95 per cent of firms that claim to be able to advise on how to respond to business trends and developments," commented Paul Gladen, president of Muzeview.
However, it seems that a growing number of accounting firms are beginning to realise the benefits of having a functional website.
A study by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) found that more companies are satisfied with the performance of their sites.
