Accountants are the most trusted source of business advice, according to a new study.

Sage's latest Pulse survey found that 35 per cent of independent business leaders go to their accountants first for financial advice on their clients' businesses.

The study also found that an increasing number of accountants are becoming more technologically minded and embracing digital working practises.

It found that 62 per cent of the respondents are on social networking sites and 29 per cent carry a Blackberry or smartphone/PDA.

Greg Ford, managing director of Sage's Accountants' Division said: " After identifying a new breed of accountants last year, we can now see a 'Facebook generation' of accountants who have become increasingly tech savvy, getting more and more comfortable with technology in the workplace as well as in private."

The recent Key Facts and Trends in the Accountancy Profession report by the Professional Oversight Board found that the number of chartered accountants in the UK has risen by 2.5 per cent over the last five years, Accountancy Magazine reports.
