First class maths graduate 'becoming a plasterer' A graduate has turned her back from a life working in the city to become a plasterer.

Gemma McCoyd, from Essex, who has a first class Masters Maths degree and spent a year at Kent State University in the US, has now enrolled on a City and Guilds plastering qualification at Leicester College.

The Daily Telegraph reports that she hopes to move into building renovation and restoration after completing her qualifications.

Ms McCoyd was initially poised to become an actuary at a leading London firm before deciding to follow her trade dreams.

"I could be earning up to £100,000 a year, instead I don't think I'm even earning £6,000," she told the newspaper.

"Some people have said I'm crazy but I thought I've got try and do what I love now or I'll always regret it."

A recent study from CareersinAudit.com found that 31 per cent of graduates will remain in the financial sector for less than two years.

Only 27 per cent are expected to continue in the industry for over five years, reported Accounting Web.
