Students have been urged to check that their landlords are correctly protecting their deposits that are charged on their accommodation.
Government-approved mydeposits.co.uk said that it was vital students returning to university in the next few months took the time to check that their landlords had correctly dealt with their deposit.
The company explained that landlords are now responsible for obtaining a confirmation of protection within 14 days and that they can be fined by courts if they fail to do this.
"Now is a busy time of year as students prepare for the new academic year. It is important for students to ask their new landlord where their cash is and with whom it is being protected," explained David Salusbury, the chairman of mydeposits.co.uk.
"The overwhelming majority of tenancies have always ended amicably but mandatory tenancy deposit protection is now just part and parcel of a landlord's legal responsibilities."
While Mr Salusbury said the "onus" of the regulation rested with landlords, it was still vital students took some responsibility and chased their property's owner for information if it was not immediately forthcoming.
