Students in the UK now have to spend close to £75 a week on their accommodation, a new report has shown.
Data released by Halifax suggested that the typical student now forks out £74.70 per week on rent.
However, the study revealed significant regional variation, with students in the south-west paying an average of £90.30 for their home.
This compared to just £31.40 a week for Northern Irish students and £53.40 for those attending university in the West Midlands.
In total, the research indicated that students spend around £175 a week on food, accommodation, alcohol, materials, transport and other costs.
"Our research showed that for most students weekly living expenses can be upwards of £200 or more," commented Mike Regnier, head of banking at Halifax.
"It's important for students to not only set a budget and stick to it but to also minimise the cost of any borrowing. This may include keeping the cost of their overdraft to a minimum by selecting a bank account with a zero per cent overdraft offer."
Recently, a study by Nielsen Online showed that students are increasingly using the internet to help them find out about how they can manage their finances and time at university.
