A large number of parents are expecting that the cost of kitting out their child's university room will exceed their monthly disposable income.
That is according to new research conducted by Savebuckets.com, which has revealed that almost one third of mums and dads questioned said that they will spend £751 furnishing their offspring's accommodation.
Savebuckets noted that the current amount of expendable monthly income in the UK is £705.
The survey questioned over 2,000 people and showed that items at the top of the list of things parents expect to buy children going to university are laptop computers and kitchen utensils.
These are followed by an LCD television, shelves/bookcases and an iPod or DVD player.
James Wenger, marketing manager of Savebuckets.com, observed that parents with children going to university could find themselves under considerable financial strain.
He explained: "The findings show that setting up their kids at university puts family budgets under even more pressure and many parents anticipate going over budget - this disregards rent, general living costs and tuition fees."
