US accountants accepting international standards A new survey has found that over 50 per cent of certified public accountants (CPA) in the US are preparing for the future implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Research by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) found that 55 per cent of CPAs are actively preparing for the future adoption of IFRS, which was an increase of 14 per cent from those preparing during a previous survey in April 2008.

The survey of almost 1,500 AICPA members found an equal percentage increase in the amount of accountants not preparing for IFRS implementation, growing to 45 per cent.

Arleen Thomas, AICPA senior vice-president for member competency and development, said the proposals for the "US adoption of international standards by 2014 is clearly getting people's attention".

She added: "What our tracking survey shows is that CPAs are increasingly aware that international standards are coming and are starting to feel a real need to get training and gain expertise in this new area."

The UK Accounting Standards Board recently announced new proposals to amend two financial instrument regulations, reports Accountancy Magazine.
