Accountancy graduates heading to public sector Graduates are turning more and more to safer job options, it has been reported, shunning the private sector's most highly-paid roles for those in the public sector.

Recent research from TMP Worldwide and the Association of Graduate Recruiters has found that two thirds of graduates are expecting to be more flexible in choosing a job than might have been necessary a few years before the financial crisis.

This means that a high number of accountancy graduates may now be looking for work with insolvency companies or even the Treasury, which is known for regular and high levels of accountancy graduate recruitment.

Neil Harrison, the head of research and planning at TMP Worldwide, told the Times: "At the moment, graduates are going for what they see as safer career options.

"It will be interesting to see whether the civil service and teaching professions have a problem retaining graduates in two or three years' time."

The training offered by the public sector to accountancy graduates will no doubt be valuable to the private sector later in an accountancy graduate's life, but the jobs on offer are often found to be as desirable as those in the private sector.
