A trusting shopkeeper who wanted to spend Boxing Day with his family without closing his hardware store decided to leave it open for customers to serve themselves.
Tom Algie, of Settle, North Yorkshire, made an 'honesty box' with a note asking shoppers to buy what they wanted and put their payment in it.
When he returned to lock up at 16:15 GMT, he found he had made £187.66 and had even received some thank-you notes.
Mr Algie said: "It was a spur of the moment decision. I just wanted to spend the holidays with my family but thought it would be quite nice to open up the shop so this seemed like a good solution.
"It's nice to know there are a lot of good honest people out there and not everything is all doom and gloom."
Meanwhile, a student was stunned to view his online bank statement and discover he was £100 billion overdrawn.
Barclays has apologised to Donald Moffat, blaming "a technical error" for the incident.
