A new body that will regulate 16,000 accountants in Ireland has begun operating.

The Chartered Accountants Regulatory Board (CARB) was set up after a decision was made to do so by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, Accountancy Age reports.

CARB was established "to regulate its members, in accordance with the provisions of the Institute's bye-laws, independently, openly and in the public interest".

Its website is now up and running and provides information pertaining to the board, the committee and its functions.

CARB will be separate from the Institute and its first chairman will be Dr Liam O'Reilly, with Don Thornhill as deputy chairman. The board contains a majority of non-chartered accountants.

The site also provides online registers that allow users to find chartered accountant firms, or those registered as auditors or investment businesses by the institute.
