Accountancy and law jobs are growing in popularity as a result of the ongoing recession, a recent Times report has claimed, with accountancy graduate recruitment becoming more competitive.
With many graduates now turning their attention away from major financial institutions, accountancy and law are the two areas which have been benefitting from a rise in applications.
Accountancy graduates could face some stiff competition in 2009, then, although having a specific accountancy degree could stand them in a much better stead than those who are migrating from a financial background.
"We've seen a huge increase already this year and, going by the attendance at our on-campus events, we expect this to continue," said Ian Powell, UK chairman and senior partner of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, said.
"Clearly the downturn is encouraging more graduates to reassess their priorities and look for professional skills and training, which will equip them for recession as well as growth periods."
Accountancy graduates working harder this year to ensure a position may benefit from working with an employment agency, which could find the most attractive roles for those entering the job market in the summer.
