Men 'dominate senior accounting positions' Men still dominate senior accounting positions, according to a new study by industry publication the International Accounting Bulletin.

The research highlights that while the number of opportunities available to women within the financial sector have increased over the past decade, there is still evidence of a glass ceiling, reports Business Wire.

Russia proved to be the nation with the greatest number of women in senior roles, with females occupying 37 per cent of top positions, although this did represent a ten per cent decrease since 1998.

The UK showed the greatest improvements over the past ten years, with the number women in senior jobs increasing from six per cent in 1998 to 20 per cent in 2008.

Similarly, in the US a fifth of top level jobs within accounting are occupied by women and the publication attributes this to the fact both nations have introduced a number of initiatives to help women progress up the career ladder and balance their work and family.

Recent research by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants highlights that among its students men earn £2,830 more in their basic salary than women.
