My interests? Cooking dogs...

My interests? Cooking dogs... A comma might be a little thing, but it can make a big difference to a CV.

Sadly, for the individual who included "cooking dogs" under the interests section of his CV this lesson has come too late, but others can still learn from such mistakes.

Research by Personal Career Management (PCM) has found that 94 per cent of job hunters risk missing out on a vacancy because their applications contain basic errors.

People who describe themselves as "a pubic relations officer", like one individual did, are unlikely to get as response to their application.

Corrine Mills, managing director at the PCM said: "Why would anyone want to employ a lawyer or a secretary who makes spelling mistakes or errors?

"If they can't pay attention to their own CV, why would you trust them to work on any of your documents?"

Even otherwise able candidates will be rejected on the basis of simple errors, she warned.

Recently, a study by KPMG and the Confederation of British Industry revealed that London could be hit by a skills shortage in the near future, so people might want to make doubly sure their CVs are up to scratch.
