Madoff jailed for 150 years Disgraced financier Bernard Madoff has been jailed for 150 years by a New York judge.

Denny Chin, presiding, passed the longest possible sentence he could as victims of the $65 billion (£38.9 billion) fraud Madoff committed looked on.

Judge Chin ignored pleas for clemency issued by defence lawyers and stated that Madoff's crime had been one of "extraordinary evil".

Although Madoff apologised for his actions, the words did little to soften the attitude of the court.

Judge Chin pointed out that the fraud had seen rich and poor alike lose large amounts of money.

He said: "This is not a bloodless crime that took place just on paper, but one that took a staggering human toll."

With Madoff is set to spend the rest of his life behind bars, his victims are now turning their attention to US regulators and asking why they did not detect the fraud sooner than they did.
