Graduate skill sets 'could change to reflect employers' needs' Accountancy graduates looking for jobs could face more competition if further education minister Kevin Brennan gets his way.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4, the politician said that not enough college leavers are finding work.

He suggested that courses should be altered to more closely reflect what is expected of students in the labour market.

Mr Brennan suggested that funding would be put into areas perceived to be most likely to require more staff in future.

Meanwhile, the recent Employment Outlook Survey found UK businesses are improving their hiring plans for the first time in three years.

Commenting on the issue, a Department for Business, Innovation and Skills spokeswoman said the knowledge of those entering jobs now could help lift the country out of its financial downturn.

"Skills are likely to be the key factor determining the UK's resilience and ability to come through recession and to make the most of upturn," she stated, adding that the department wants to give employers a bigger say in what is taught.ADNFCR-868-ID-19398410-ADNFCR
