Professional accountancy bodies (the participants) have agreed to back changes to the way their members are disciplined.
The Accountancy and Actuarial Discipline Board (AADB) has finalised amendments to its Accountancy Scheme and confirmed that the participants will recommend them to their governing bodies.
Under the changes, a desirability test would be introduced to help decide if an issue should proceed to a disciplinary tribunal.
The AADB is also set to obtain the power to conduct preliminary enquiries before deciding if it should investigate an issue.
Timothy Walker, chairman of the AADB, said: "We welcome the support of the participants for these changes which we believe will further strengthen the disciplinary process in public interest cases. We anticipate the changes will come into effect in January 2010 at the latest."
As part of the Financial Reporting Council, the AADB investigates cases of potential misconduct which raise public interest issues.
