UK retail sales 'rose year-on-year by 1.9 per cent in May'

New figures from KPMG have found that UK retail sales rose by 1.9 per cent in May 2008 when compared year-on-year with 2007.

The results from the firm's Retail Sales Monitor found that food sales saw a strong growth and that the revenue from clothing sales has begun to rise after several months of decline.

Helen Dickinson, head of retail for KPMG, said that "pressures on consumer retail spending continue".

"May's figures represent a significant improvement on the previous couple of months and were achieved through a much more consistent performance across the different sectors," she added.

Ms Dickinson also highlighted that the weather throughout May could have contributed to the increased figures. The month saw several sunny days compared to large amounts of wet weather in 2007.

New West End, which represents the west end of London, found that footfall in the area rose by 2.8 per cent over the last month with strong spending reported by German, Italian, Spanish and Irish visitors, reports the Independent.
