Accountancy graduate recruitment under the microscope

Graduates hoping to take a job in the new year will have to ensure their shoes are polished more than ever and that their portfolios are in good condition, it has been suggested, following a rise in the number of job seekers.

A wave of redundancies in the first few months of 2009 will lead to as many as 300,000 job seekers being added to the number already counted, meaning the competition for accountancy graduates may be stiffer than in previous years.

However, that is not to say that finding a job should be too much harder than normal for accountancy graduates.

John Philpott, the chief economist at the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development, commented: "Overall the 18-month period from the start of the recession in mid-2008 until the end of 2009 will witness the loss of around three quarters of a million jobs, equivalent to the total net rise in employment in the preceding three years."

Despite this, accountancy graduates looking for work will of course be applying for jobs with different specifications to those applied for by job seekers with experience.

Research from the past few months this year shows that the actual number of graduate recruitment jobs is only likely to decline by one per cent in the next year, meaning accountancy graduate recruitment will not become too difficult for many.
