Mr Snow will take charge of a range of matters at the organisation and has been given special responsibility for the overall development of the FRC's strategy and business plan.

He will also deal with corporate communications and oversee operational matters.

Stephen Haddrill, chief executive officer of the FRC, said: "The FRC considers it particularly important that we communicate powerfully with the market and that our reputation is deservedly strong amongst all our stakeholders, including other international and regulatory authorities, parliament and those sections of the public we serve, such as investors."

Mr Snow said he was looking forward to working at the council during what he called an exciting time.
