The government is preparing to clamp down on tax evasion amongst middle-class professionals, it has been claimed.
Among those set to be affected by the clampdown by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are doctors and dentists.
Mike Wells, the revenue's director of risk and intelligence, issued a stark warning saying: "I strongly urge any in this group [the medical profession] who think they may have outstanding tax liabilities on their income to get in touch with HMRC and get their tax affairs in order simply and on the best available terms."
"The message is clear: contact us before we contact you."
It is believed that tax evasion costs the economy around £3 billion a year.
Under the current HMRC scheme, medical professionals have until March 31st to declare any outstanding tax payments from income they have not declared.
A recent Financial Services Authority (FSA) investigation into the financial disclosures of HBOS, RBS and Bradford & Bingley did not uncover any illegal activity.
