Due to an anticipated increased focus on research and financial risk control, the demand for those in accounting and finance will grow this year, according to research.
Research from the representative body for the staffing industry Research & Employment Confederation (REC) has predicted that salaries in the profession will also increase at a steady rate in 2010, with audit, risk and financial control being the best-paid roles.
Bill Haynes, chair of the REC, said that financial acumen will be at a premium, whether it's in the public or private sector.
"It'll be the people who display a high level of emotional intelligence and commercial awareness [who will earn the most]," he added.
A salary of around £20,000 can be expected by trainee accountants, with those in London earning up to £40,000, according to information services company PublicTechnology.net.
Mr Haynes pointed out that the public sector faces "some tough choices this year" and there will be a need for strong financial control.
Due to the expected increase in the call for capable finance resources, Mr Haynes predicted that public sector finance roles will grow throughout the year.
