Accountancy applications from jobseekers with diverse backgrounds are rising The amount of people that are applying for jobs at accountancy firms from different sectors and backgrounds have been increasing in recent years, according to a partner at accountancy firm KPMG.

Neil Sherlock has spoken out about the recent support shown by the government for former cabinet minister Alan Milburn's report on Fair Access to the Professions.

According to Mr Sherlock, who led the input from the accountancy profession into the report, the accountancy profession is committed to increasing the diversity of staff employed.

However he also recognises that there is more still to do and "that is why the Milburn report, and the government's positive response to it, are timely".

Mr Milburn is leading the Panel on Fair Access to Professions, which is hoping to ensure people from all backgrounds have the same chances of being employed into professions such as accountancy.

KMPG is one company that already aims for a diverse workplace as over 40 per cent of its graduate employees are female. It is also looking into how its internship programme can include more under-represented groups.
