Business secretary Peter Mandelson has told universities that they must sharpen up their act or face plunging the UK into trouble through a lack of high-quality graduates.
Lord Mandelson explained that educational institutes need to start "investing in the courses and supplying the skilled graduates" that the country needs.
He lamented the lack of students coming out of university with the skills required by recruiters and said changes are needed to bring the next batch of graduates up to scratch.
"Universities have to reform and change what they offer and deliver to students both to meet continued demands and employment needs of the economy," the Yorkshire Post reported him as saying.
The minister added that this could mean changes in employment at universities and said that everyone has to be able to adapt to changing circumstances in order to perform at the required levels.
Meanwhile, the Institute for Employment Studies recently predicted that the worst may be over for the UK in terms of job losses.
